The more gear people own, the more they want to use it. compressors and IMO they would sound much better.īut again, that’s all just one man’s opinion I’m certainly not trying to argue that all the successful engineers from the mid ‘80s through the present day who use SSL master bus compression are wrong. Take those same modern rock songs, remove the SSL from the master bus, and individually compress the different elements as needed with some good FET/diode bridge/opto/etc. And second because (if I may throw another potentially controversial opinion into the mix) SSL and VCA compression in general has too much of a smooth, glossy, plastic sound that especially detracts from rock. First because compressing the two-bus shrinks everything in terms of both bandwidth and dynamics, leading to a smaller, less impactful mix. However it’s my opinion that modern rock could have been so much more powerful had the SSL bus compressor NOT been used. The SSL buss compressor IS the sound of rock really and the cream of modern rock has been done when ssls were the go to.Īt the same time, there’s been plenty of natural sounding, styles over compressed and yes sounding less open!I’ll agree it’s the sound of rock from the mid ‘80s through the present, and while I’d argue that rock peaked both musically and sonically long before the SSL bus compressor even existed I do happen to like a lot of modern rock as well. I think it really depends on appropriate use for style and skill of application.
